“It’s government overreach, and it’s going to have a detrimental effect on the character of our city that we’re already seeing with the Capone house,” said Sarah Giller Nelson, chair of the Miami Beach design review board. Critics, however, say the law opens up exactly that possibility and is another example of a DeSantis power grab. Its sponsor, the Republican state senator Bryan Avila, insisted the law was needed to hasten the removal of dangerous or worn-out buildings at risk of collapse, and was not intended to smooth a path for greedy developers. “Ocean Drive is not going to get bulldozed,” he told legislative colleagues in April. The City of Miami called his home "a menace to the safety and well-being of residents" and the State of Florida declared martial law and ordered the immediate arrest of Capone. Miami press at the time was also excited to report and propagandize Capone's famous spaghetti and steak parties, at which according to Paul George, alcohol was not served.

The flashy, vicious Scarface who enjoyed the spotlight was losing his faculties. The mob boss bought his home on Miami Beach’s Palm Island waterfront the year before the massacre, in 1928. He laid down $40,000 for a 6,000-foot main villa, then spent another $200,000 to build a gatehouse facing the street, a seven-foot-high wall, search lights, a coral rock grotto and a cabana facing the water. According to Preservation Nation, Capone wanted protection on both sides of the estate.
MB American co-founder and architect Monica Melotti led the architecture and design renovations of Capone’s mansion. Needless to say, Capone did not receive a warm welcome from the Miami authorities. Many were outraged by his presence – leading to multiple questionable arrests of the man.

It had a heated pool, a cabana bar, and a European courtyards, which he probably enjoyed far more than prison bars and courthouses. Via CBS, Capone's Miami mansion sat on a 30,000-square-foot lot and had one of the biggest swimming pools in the city, a 60-foot by 30-foot behemoth. Capone spent the final years of his life in Miami, according to History, and according to anyone with eyes, he went out in style. Al Capone had more money than he had sense, which is really saying something since he was a criminal mastermind. He was able to use that dough to buy a palatial place in Miami, a massive mansion in New Jersey, and a comparatively modest brick two-flat in Chicago's Lincoln Park Manor neighborhood. Per the Inquirer, this humble Illinois home measured 2,820 square feet and had an apartment on each floor. Curbed Chicago writes that according to urban legend, the brick two-flat had a secret tunnel to his detached garage, but if it did exist, it no longer does.
From there, he began living a luxurious and public lifestyle, spending money lavishly, although always in cash to avoid a trail. Newspapers of the time estimated Capone’s operations generated $100 million in revenue annually. Torrio was running a numbers and gambling operation near Capone’s home when Capone began running small errands for him. Although Torrio left Brooklyn for Chicago in 1909, the two remained close. Early on, Capone stuck to legitimate employment, working in a munitions factory and as a paper cutter.
There was nothing in Capone’s childhood or family life that could have predicted his rise to infamy as America’s most notorious gangster. Deirdre Marie Capone, the mobster’s great-niece and only living family member with memories of the “majestic” mansion, said she was saddened by its demise. Apparently notorious crime boss Al Capone had a soft spot for sunshine and warmth after spending so many years living through harsh Chicago winters. He purchased a sprawling seaside estate on Palm Island in Miami in 1928, and lived there after his 1939 release from jail until his death in 1947, according to CBS Miami.
The eye-popping architectural detail of the Crystal Ballroom is where the iconic baseball bat scene from The Untouchables was filmed. Of course, Capone didn’t actually beat rivals to death in that gorgeous room. The Crystal Ballroom is the site where “Lucky” Luciano hosted a gangster’s convention in 1931, though.
Al Capone's granddaughters initially put the pistol up for auction in 2021, alongside about 200 of their grandfather's personal belongings. Witherell's auction house, based in Sacramento, facilitated the bidding on a broad range of items Capone had owned during his life that by then were part of his estate, including jewelry, watches and numerous weapons of varying types. The .45, which sold in the end for hundreds of thousands of dollars more than anticipated, went to a private collector. In 1923, when Chicago elected a reformist mayor who announced that he planned to rid the city of corruption, Torrio and Capone moved their base beyond the city limits to suburban Cicero. To ensure they could continue doing business, Torrio and Capone initiated an intimidation effort on the day of the election, March 31, 1924, to guarantee their candidate would get elected.

In the past, we've always gotten the pre-made gingerbread house kit and done it with the kids. The project is a one-and-done afternoon activity that, quite honestly, always falls flat. My teen daughter asked if we could skip the kit and make a gingerbread house "like they do in the movies" this year. It's so simple yet with sweet details like a pretzel pathway and star topper. I ended up using Wilton decorating icing in “stiff” consistency, which worked well to hold the candy decorations. But, after much urging from my daughter Paloma, I went ahead and threw a gingerbread house decorating party with about a dozen kids. Hold it high over the house and gently shake allowing the sugar to fall onto the roof of the gingerbread house. Or you can try spreading the process of creating a homemade gingerbread house out over a few days. To add a little character on the outside of your gingerbread house, place a sugar cone upside down, and pipe some green frosting on the outside. Adding fallen snow is a very simple way to add character to your gingerbread house. Simply sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of your creation for it to appear as if your house has fresh snow.
Especially if you live in a humid climate, this step is very important. A cool dry day will give your gingerbread house the best outcome. Unfortunately, Franny left acting after her father's job took him away from Hollywood. Kristy McNicol was recast as Patricia, who abruptly became a sports-loving character with no affinity for books or school. The story was filmed in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, standing in for 1940s Nebraska; the real-life locations included the school and homes of the town. The set decorators and location filming gave the story a delightfully authentic period feel; you truly believe you are in a post-World War II home and community. The children in Addie's class are even shown beginning the school day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag without the 1956 "under God" addition, as it would have been then. The only thing that looks a bit "off" are Lisa Lucas' modern-style glasses, which are assumed to be her own, or else they would have used something styled more to the time.

A well-preserved and fascinating example of Arts and Crafts architecture, designed by Greene and Greene, it was built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. Addie and her friends, designing dresses for a school homemaking class spring style show, are thrilled to discover that Broadway actress Constance Payne, neé Constance Gunderson, a Clear River native who left home many years earlier, has returned to town. When they visit her house to get her autograph, Addie, who's told the girls that Constance and her dad are old high school friends, not only impulsively asks her to judge their style show, but invites her to dinner.
Unlike the other Addie Mills stories, this story was only one hour. Jason Robards had grown the moustache after a car accident; it covered scars from surgery on his upper lip. When CBS released this story to video it was renamed The Holiday Treasure so it could be sold with the Christmas tapes. Sadly, Alexa Kenin died in 1985, killed by a fan who was stalking her.

Some say it was the first modern house to respond to California's unique climate, serving as the prototype for the distinctive California style that developed in the early twentieth century. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House.
But that would have meant she was nearly a year old on her first Christmas, not "a few weeks" or "a few months" old and the gifts Helen made for her would be inappropriate for a child who would possibly be walking by then. You've seen this iconic mid-century house and its view countless times in films, advertisements, and magazines. It's one of my favorite places to go in LA and especially beautiful at twlight.
